Superbowl Showdown…

Superbowl Showdown! Will you be watching?

Although our favorite team failed to make it to the Superbowl this year, I assure you my family would not miss watching this game! We are huge sports fans (well, most of us) and this year promises to be yet another sensational showdown! There are so many intense storylines, East versus West and brother pitted against brother, that make this game a must see unfolding drama to behold! All this meeting in neutral territory to play out in the heart of Louisiana… New Orleans!

Even if you are not a sports fanatic, as my family is, perhaps you tune in just for the commercials? These ads will be widely discussed for days following the big game. The best or the worst, no matter, will surely gain their businesses much publicity so well worth the millions invested for these brief moments! Let’s face it, you can’t miss watching that E-Trade baby! What will that wacky baby be up to this year? Haha! Or the infamous Go-Daddy commercials? Maybe the craziness of the Doritos commercials? Which are you waiting to see?

Maybe your oblivious to the commercials? Well what about the half time show? Does that draw your interest? I know the world will be tuning in to see Beyonce perform in the wake of her controversial inauguration lip synching. Rumor has it there will be a Destiny’s Child reunion. I wonder what else?

Superbowl squares? Yes, no, maybe? ;) Well alright then!

Even if none of that appeals to you I am sure you are aware that the big game is this weekend? February 3rd in New Orleans and my family is ready! We will be watching, snacking and cheering so hopefully this year’s showdown will not disappoint! In celebration I surely had to put together a Superbowl lunch for my 10 year old Brendan! This is a lunch that will most definitely appeal to my XBox playing, Madden 2013 loving son!

This Superbowl themed lunch is served in a Lunchbots Trio and includes:

  • A football shaped sandwich with the letters XLVII cut from cheese on top representing the 47th Superbowl. The crown pick represents New Orleans where the showdown will be played out!
  • The red strawberries subtlely represent the team color for the San Francisco 49ers while the purple grapes do the same for the Baltimore Ravens. 2 football picks are poked into the fresh produce, one for each team!
  • Finally the green snap pea crisps and the white salt pepper popped rice cakes give a nod to the field.

Now I am left to wonder who this year’s victor will be! Do you have a favorite?

Football Lunch Take Two!

Monday, November 19th, 2012

Last week I made a football lunch for my son Brendan that I wasn’t quite happy with. This week I decided to bring that lunch back (figuratively speaking of course) and try those details again! In case you missed it you can check it out here. There were just a few details that I knew were off even though it was still an enjoyable lunch for my son. I felt that I didn’t capture the green turf of the field and that I failed to include a football anywhere in the lunch itself. I also felt that perhaps the jersey sandwich could use some sprucing up. Of course maybe I’m just picky!

Picky or otherwise I did attempt the same lunch again with improved details. I am much happier with it this time. The green grapes and broccoli give the feeling of the field. I did happen upon some football food picks at the cake decorating store (lucky me) but the Ritz Crackers with the football design probably would have been enough. I also added some stripes on the shoulder of the jersey simply by cutting two extra “number ones” with my mini cookie cutters and then cutting them in half (actually I used o and i letter cutters). You can adhere cheese details to the bread with mayo if you want them to stay put! I do wish I had cut the cheese stick into smaller pieces and placed them in between the grapes and broccoli to look like a longer field instead of a goal line but yes, it is true that sometimes I am picky! ;)

Short of the Goal Line…

Wednesday, November 14th, 2012

Today I had a great vision to build a really cool football themed lunch for my son Brendan. I hoped I would score a touchdown but maybe ended up kicking the field goal instead! I am slightly disappointed but I ran out of time so had to settle! I think that Brendan will appreciate my efforts none-the-less.

The elements I really wanted were:

  • A football jersey, which I did achieve! The number 10 is the age of my son Brendan! Maybe I could have added some stripes at the shoulders and used a darker bread.
  • A Goal line. I ran out of time and didn’t line the carrots straight across the slender compartment of my Lunchbots Trio. I could have lined the grapes and carrots up perfectly! Alas it didn’t occur to me until the last moment when time was up! I should have spiked the ball to stop the clock lol!
  • A football. I totally missed this! I was wishing I had a football food pick but if I had thought hard I would have just used a Ritz Cracker with the football on it. It would have been so easy to put on top of the Annie’s Homegrown Party Mix under the Trader Joes Yogurt Covered Stars!
  • Green turf. All I had to do was put some lettuce under the jersey sandwich to give that hint of turf. If only I could start over but the drive is done and I have turn over the ball, well the lunch! lol

Ultimately I achieved what it is I want in all lunches. Something that will be eaten and contains; fruits, veggies, protein and grains! So although I missed the goal line, I think I still scored some big points for mommy effort! So in the spirit of the game I have called my lunch first and ten. I still have 3 more shots at it, right?
