laptop lunches review stop

I have wanted to try a Laptop Lunches Bento Lunch Box for quite some time. I have long admired their beautiful colors over on their website. You see I am an admitted color junky and perhaps I need therapy! Retail therapy that is! So I have acquired myself a new lunch box in some cool shades of blue, green and purple! I have got to be honest, it was hard to choose! These bento boxes come in a stunning array of gorgeous, saturated color! I figured back to school season was a good enough excuse to allow myself to concede to the color temptation and get one!

I chose the Bento Lunch Box 2.0 in Berry Blue. I have 3 boys and 1 girl so I wanted something unisex but it had to appeal to the boys since they will use it most. I think these colors fit that tall order pretty well. When the package arrived on my door step I was pretty excited to see it in person and the color does not disappoint. It’s not all about color though, is it? You may wonder about functionality and practicality, right? Alright, let’s talk a little about that if we must!

These boxes are safe! They are free from lead, BPA, phthalates, and PVC.

These boxes are eco-friendly! They are recyclable and reusable! You can also reduce waste by not using plastic baggies, cling wraps and foil!

These boxes are cost effective! What you invest in purchasing you will recoup in no time! Packing instead of buying out or at school SAVES! Stop buying expensive individual servings for lunch packing and use the portionable containers instead!

These boxes are easy to clean! You guessed it, dishwasher safe!

These boxes are very configurable! Some of the compartments are lidded allowing you to keep your leak-ables safe. You can remove heat up items easily for microwaving! You can keep food separated for picky eaters! You can change how the box looks – just for fun!

These boxes have the cool factor! Colorful, configurable with even space for utensils and cloth napkins. They are cool to see, cool to hold and cool to use! Not to mention there is an excellent selection of cool lunch bags available to suit your kiddo’s personality!

laptop lunches review

As you can see there are so many good features about this lunch box and I know I will use it often! A couple of things to consider when buying.

  • The outside box is a unique size at 9″ x 7″ x 2.25″ and does not fit into just any lunch bag. If you buy the Laptop Lunches cooler or a larger cooler this will NOT be an issue for you. I did not purchase the bag but surely will go back and do so.
  • The smaller lidded containers can be a challenge to open for little ones. Laptop Lunches does recommend putting a small amount of olive oil on the inside of the lid ridge to make this easier! Note you do not have to use the lids if your items are not leak-able! This is NOT an issue for me since my littles ones have teacher assistance at school.
  • There are a lot of components to the box and I could see a busy family losing track of some small items. Luckily Laptop Lunches DOES sell extras and replacements so no worries! Actually this allows you to expand your color choices OR have extras if no one did the dishes… hmmm but that never happens, right?

Now let’s talk about the lunches…

Lunch #1 (pictured at top) contains:

  • Cucumbers, red & yellow peppers
  • Ranch dressing in small container as veggie dip
  • strawberries and blackberries
  • peanut butter sandwiches
  • Pirate Brand Original Tings

Lunch #2 (pictured above) contains:

  • Roasted veggies (carrots, zucchini, asparagus)
  • Red grapes
  • BBQ chicken spinach salad
  • Ranch dressing for salad
  • Sweet potato sticks

caprese blt easylunchboxes giveaway

If you poke around this blog at all it won’t take you very long to figure out that Easylunchboxes are one of my absolute favorite containers. I use them regularly and I personally own 12 containers (3 sets) which are actually mine and were not provided for review (so no disclaimer at the bottom of the post)! I also own a cooler and a set of mini dippers. I’m a definite fan. Actually to be perfectly upfront it is the very container that was the inspiration for changing the way that I pack lunch (iPackLunch get it lol?)! Before I found the Easylunchboxes gallery I was guilty of low nutrition, high waste lunches and well, frequent lunch time meals from the dollar menu. You know what I mean! I thought I didn’t have time for anything else. These containers changed all that for me!

There is a reason after all that these are the #1 best-selling lunchboxes on Amazon.com!

With back to school days on the very short horizon I’d highly recommend picking up a set of these in classics or brights to be ready for school lunch packing! (In full disclosure links contained within this post are affiliate links and I may earn a commission on any sales but opinions are my own.)

Why this container for back to school?

This container is a great size for holding all the lunch. No disposable baggies or individual packages required! That = cost effective and eco-friendly! Not to mention no extra packages for kiddos to have to open!

That brings me to the next point, these are easy to open for all ages! The trade off is that they are not leak proof. This is not a huge issue as sauces, dips etc can be packaged in a smaller, leak tight container and carried in the same cooler.

You can portion the food for proper or desired nutritional intake! (low calorie or correct amounts of protein/grain/produce etc)

The smaller compartments can be used to separate food for snack breaks versus food for lunch time.

The compartments allow food to stay separate for those picky eaters who don’t like their food to touch!

The containers are a great value. At $13.95 for a set of 4 that means each container is less than $3.50!

The cooler bag is great for all ages too! It can be jazzed up for smaller kids or used plain for older kids for whom the non embarrassment factor is important.

The cooler bag also allows the food to be carried flat which insures food will stay as you packed it!

Finally, Easylunchboxes as a company is a great source of inspiration for packing lunch! Whether you checkout the Easylunchboxes gallery, their Facebook page or their Pinterest Boards you will have a constant influx of ideas! Don’t forget to check out my ideas too!

healthy back to school lunches

Now let’s talk lunch…

Lunch#1 (pictured at top) – Caprese BLT sandwich (my recipe is featured over at Spryliving), sweet potato tortilla chips, apple slices, celery and a peanut butter greek yogurt fruit dip.

Lunch #2 (pictured above) – Pillsbury Pizza Scrolls (my instructions below), mango, snow peas and raw carrot chips.

Pillsbury Pizza Scroll Instructions

  • Roll out one can of Pillsbury Crescent rolls (rolls out as a rectangle shape, do not break at perforations)
  • Using a pastry brush spread on a thin layer of your favorite pizza sauce (consider putting pureed veggies in your sauce for extra nutrition)
  • With the long sides of the rectangle top and bottom in front of you (shorter sides right and left) sprinkle on grated mozzarella cheese. (You will roll the scrolls from the side closest to you, the filling will spread upward as you roll so you can skip sprinkling the cheese a couple inches from the top edge)
  • Layer on your pepperoni (turkey pepperoni used here) also skipping the last couple inches at the top
  • Starting at the long edge closest to you, roll the rectangle upward jelly roll style, the filling will spread upwards as you do. Do your best to keep the roll tight.
  • Cut your roll in 1 to 1-1/2 inch segments and place on a lightly greased cookie sheet
  • Bake at 375 degrees for 10-14 minutes (keep an eye on the bottoms of the rolls) until the rolls have puffed up and begun browning
  • You can include extra pizza sauce for dipping
